Our suggestions to get the year off to a great start!

There’s no shortage of places to eat and things to do on New Year’s Day!

The first day of the year is here! Want to keep last night’s celebrations going into the New Year? Make the most of it by going to a restaurant (if you’re still hungry), seeing a show or simply stretching your legs.

In terms of going out, you can try your luck at the  Casino, as today’s the perfect day! For those who don’t already know, Lyon’s casinos are a great place to continue celebrating the New Year. With a restaurant, shows and, of course, games, you’re guaranteed a fun day and evening. If your lucky star is with you, you may even come away with the jackpot! You have a choice between the Casino Le Pharaon in Lyon’s 6th district and Casino le Lyon Vert in Tour-de-Salvagny.

On the 1st of January, Winter Wonderland. is on at the Auditorium. The magical decorations and lighting are simply stunning. What could be more wonderful than beginning the year with stars in your eyes? We recommend booking your seats as soon as possible.

Another major venue open is the Lyon’s Opera House, where Rodelinda is being performed. This opera by Handel tells a story of passionate love, impossible mourning and political rivalries. A masterpiece!

For a bit of light exercise and fun, the Patinoire des Lumières (outdoor ice rink) on Place Ambroise Courtois is open from 9.30 am to 6 pm. Lace up your skates and hit the ice! You can then continue the fun at Euro Parc, which is great for kids and grown-ups. This huge indoor (and heated) fairground has more then 40 attractions, as well as candy floss and bumper cars of course!

For some effortless sightseeing, the Lyon City Tram offers a one-hour tour to discover the district that made Lyon the Capital of Silk. Further information here.

Lastly, a small, non-exhaustive selection of restaurants open on this pubic holiday to enjoy the delights of Lyon’s fine food.
With so many things to do, the first day of 2019 will fly by.

I wish you a Happy New Year and amazing cultural discoveries!
