It’s finally time to take a look at the events taking place between September and December 2020 to finish the year in style! Festivals, shows, and other major cultural or sports events have returned, so what are you waiting for?
There’s nothing like a concert or festival to quench your thirst for culture. Along with the “unmissables” that you’ll be delighted to rediscover, there’ll also be a major new event that you’ll just love… Here’s a month-by-month review of what you can look forward to. Why not note them right down in your diary as top picks for your future weekends? (Subject to changes or cancellations due to health rules).
September 2020: summer’s gone but the fun goes on in Lyon!
As always in September, we’re giving you the chance to check out the 2020-2021 cultural calendar, complete with some exciting surprises. More than ever, emotion, pleasure and discovery are on the menu this autumn!
If you haven’t yet been able to take in the must-see exhibition at Lyon museum of fine arts (Picasso Bathers and Swimmers), there’s still time, as it’s open till 3 January 2021, but don’t dally and make sure to book!
Another absolutely must-see major exhibition is Vivienne Westwood - Art, Fashion & Subversion at the Lyon fabrics museum. This exhibition, entirely devoted to the great lady herself, is paying tribute to the empress of punk fashion for the first time in France. You can check it out until 17 January 2021. Booking also required.
October 2020 in Lyon will be quite a month!
After several months of renovation, the Lyon museum of contemporary art is making its big come-back and opening again with two exciting exhibitions for you to note down in your diaries. Edi Dubien - L'Homme au mille natures ((i.e. the man of a thousand natures, initially set for the Parc de la Tête d’Or’s Orangerie) will be held on the 1st floor from 7 October 2020 to 3 January 2021. Drawing is the medium that Edi Dubien uses to most sensitively convey the changes that children and teenagers go through as they forge their identities. This “work in progress” is suggested through expressionless faces, and sometimes only sketched-in features, but emotion is ever-present nonetheless. Up on the 2nd floor, Comme un parfum d'aventure (i.e. Like a smell of adventure) offers you the opportunity to rediscover a number of the museum’s works, exploring the unprecedented, global health crisis experienced simultaneously by some 7.55 billion human beings (also visible from 7 October 2020 to 3 January 2021).
The Musée Jean Couty is paying tribute to Robert Doisneau with an exhibition of artists' portraits and views of Lyon. More than 90 photographs are on show to allow you to compare and contrast them with Jean Couty’s paintings devoted to views of Lyon. Check it out until 11 April 2021.
The much-awaited exhibition devoted to Antoine de Saint Exupéry will be held from 14 October 2020 to 25 April 2021 at La Sucrière. Entitled Un Petit Prince parmi les Hommes (i.e. A Little Prince Among Men), the 100%-immersive exhibition transports you into a simultaneously intimate and fairy-tale world.
From 8 to 25 October 2020, the Peinture Fraîche Festival (i.e. fresh paint festival) is here for you to feast your eyes on. Come down and check out work by a wide selection of street artists who’ll be waiting, spray can in hand, to add a touch of colour to your daily lives!
What would October be without the Festival Lumière? Don’t worry, it WILL be back from 10 to 18 October 2020. Everything will be in place to allow you to enjoy the whole programme without a care in the world. This year’s event will pay tribute to, among others, Michel Audiard and the work of the American director Clarence Brown.
The NordicWalkin'Lyon by Alptis 2020 features four walks (8km, 13km, 16km and 20km) over completely new routes so you can see Lyon in a different light. Starts on 17 and 18 October 2020. Sign up on the NordicWalkin'Lyon website.
The 20th anniversary edition of the Vintage Fashion Market will also be held over the weekend of 17 and 18 October 2020 on the emblematic La Sucrière site.
The unmissable Equita Lyon and its prestigious horse-riding competition are returning to Eurexpo from 28 October to 1 November 2020.
November 2020: something for everyone!
Epoqu'auto from 6 to 8/11, the European Night of museums on 14/11, the Silk in Lyon Festival from 18 to 22/11, and Printemps des Docks from 20 to 22/11!
December 2020: Lyon always ends the year in style!
Finally, December will be lit up brightly by the Fête des Lumières from 5 to 8/12. This year’s event will undoubtedly hold a very special place in our hearts and give us the chance to finish the year in style!
