L’incoronazione di Poppea, or the triumph of cynicism, is a tale of power and love where heightened passions unfold in waves of distress, jealousy, and eroticism.
Married to Octavia, Emperor Nero is in love with Poppea. To crown his mistress, he must condemn his empress. This tale, drawn from the scandalous life of ancient Rome’s most infamous emperor, becomes for Monteverdi the source of scenes that blend sensuality, comedy, and tragedy. Premiered in 1642, the music of L’incoronazione di Poppea continues to reveal new layers with each performance. Roles are fluid: performers may portray multiple characters; male roles can be sung by women and vice versa.
In Monteverdi’s time, ancient themes were used to expose political corruption. Today, the subject remains just as relevant.
Following The Girl of the Golden West in 2024, stage director Tatjana Gürbaca brings her precision and depth to this gem, alongside conductor Simon-Pierre Bestion, a specialist of the Baroque repertoire. The music is at its most radiant, as our hearts burn with longing and cry out in despair, stunned by the perfection of the voices.
