Lieux divers Lieux divers - 69123 Lyon

The strength of this one-of-a-kind festival is firstly that it is held in the exact same spot in which the Lumière brothers invented the Cinematograph and shot their very first film. The other good thing is that there are no competitors, only winners: the public can (re)watch films rarely seen in cinemas, and in their original restored versions. This is also their opportunity to meet, listen to and learn from actors, actresses and film directors from all over the world.

The other winners of this event will be those same actors and actresses, who will get to meet members of the public outside of the context of film promotions and awards, merely out of love for their profession, and for the pleasure of enjoying the public enthusiasm they arouse.

During this weeklong event, some 420 projections and major ceremonies will follow each other in quick succession.

Retrospectives: Henri Decoin, Muriel Box (English screenwriter and director in the ‘50s), Richard Thorpe, the Chinese King Hu, and the 3rd part of the complete films of Buster Keaton.
Tributes to Liv Ullmann, Max Linder, and Catherine Hessling (Jean Renoir's muse)…
Major projections
For this 10th edition, we'll be celebrating the 50th anniversary of Stanley Kubrick's legendary film 2001 a Space Odyssey, and the 15th anniversary of the 6-hour Italian film "The Best of Youth".
Not forgetting "Grandes Gueules" by Robert Enrico, with the French actor Bourvil.

A programme including music and film-based events
Cinema concerts with the Orchestre National de Lyon, French singer Camélia Jordana singing some of the best loved songs from French films, and French actress Catherine Frot singing chansons réalistes, accompanied by a pianist, in cafés throughout the city.

Photograph exhibitions with "Ils sont venus à Lyon" ("They were here, in Lyon") by Jean-Marc Gransard in particular, featuring celebrities who attended the previous editions of the festival.

The thematic night at La Halle Tony Garnier devoted to The Lord of the Rings.

And of course master classes, the classic film market, and late night events at the Halle Tony Garnier arena and concert hall, and at the Institut Lumière.

And finally the Day Village event at the Institut Lumière and its cinema library, and the Night Village event on the moored barge La Plateforme.

Numerous guests…
Liv Ullmann, Javier Bardem, Claude Lelouch, Peter Bogdanovitch, Alfonso Cuaron, Douglas Trumbull,...

During an evening event, the Prix Lumière is awarded to a great actor or director for his/her entire work and contribution to the history of cinema. During former editions, the Prix Lumière has been awarded to such people as Clint Eastwood, Milos Forman, Gérard Depardieu, Ken Loach, Quentin Tarantino, Martin Scorsese, Catherine Deneuve and Wong Kar-waï, in the presence of numerous key figures of the cinema.

In 2018 the prize will be awarded to Jane Fonda, daughter of Henry Fonda, a free-spirited idealist and politically-committed actress who has worked for some of the greatest film directors. The Lumière Prize will be presented to her on the 19th October 2018 at the Centre de Congrès in Lyon.
