France’s most queer-friendly film festival is back, from the 6th to the 14th of March in Lyon, with an exceptional ninth edition. Request the programme.
The festival ‘Écrans Mixtes’ (ÉM) begins in style on Wednesday the 6th of March with the French premiere of a restored version of Maurice. Directed by James Ivory in 1987, this masterpiece portrays the difficulties of living as a homosexual in England at the beginning of the twentieth century. A special treat for fans, the American director will be attending in person, as the festival’s guest of honour.
A retrospective will be dedicated to this master director (for the first time in France), including screenings of Howards End, The Golden Bowl, A Room with a View, The Bostonians and the Oscar-winning Call me by your name. In addition to a total of eight film screenings, a masterclass will be given at Lyon 2 University.
ÉM is giving a carte blanche to the Brazilian festival ‘Novo Queer Cinema’, with six screenings, as well as its counterpart from Turin ‘LGBTI’ and the Toulouse Cinémathèque.
There will also be previews, such as Vita & Virginie, directed by Chanya Button (starring Gemma Arterton, Elizabeth Debicki and the legendary Isabella Rossellini).
And where would the festival be without its fantastic parties? There promises to be a lot of glitter on Saturday the 9th of March, with the official Glam Against the Machine evening at the boat venue Le Sonic, and Greta Gratos’ show at Le Lavoir Public.

ÉM fights discrimination against the LGBTQI community and women through the unifying medium of film, encouraging thought and the discovery of other forms of artistic expression.
This is Antoine. The only moustache in the office. The fact that he has managed to find a niche in a team exclusively made up of women is proof that he has been good at cultivating the better side of his nature. By that we mean his feminine side…
