City of silk
From the 21st to the 24th of November 2019, the festival Silk in Lyon will be cocooning at the Palais de la Bourse.
A major event for local silk-industry stakeholders, the four-day SIL festival is all about sharing passion for silk.
Fun and educational spaces will be created at the Palais de la Bourse to explore the world of silk.
Want to learn more about how silkworms are used to make this precious fabric?
Learn all about the six key stages of the silk-making process: sericulture (silkworm rearing), reeling and throwing, weaving, creation of the design, frame printing and finishing.
Meet professionals offering 100% Made-in-France silk creations, including shawls, stoles and scarves, of course, as well as accessories, jewellery, silk objects and even sculptures!
Want to discover a different culture? The artistic know-how of the city of Kyoto, Japan, will be celebrated at this year’s festival. This “culture of refinement” is reflected in the precious kimonos and silk brocades to be exhibited for the occasion.
The event will also include activities and workshops, including silk painting, Japanese flower arrangement, demonstrations on miniature weaving looms, an introduction to the art of wearing a kimono, and ribbon embroidery, as well as conferences and guided tours of the building.
Children have not been forgotten, with a treasure hunt, a quiz on life during the time of the canuts (Lyon’s former silk-workers), a “petits gones” (kids) area, and an educational booklet, as well as an introduction to weaving for budding silk-weavers.
Whether you want to learn, experiment, be creative or get an early start to the Christmas shopping, it looks set to be a busy four days!
Eléonore is the romantic member of the team! Rumour has it that she knows her classics better than anyone else, and if you want to strike up a conversation with her, just mention Jane Austen, and you'll be away!
