Scary Lyon!

Creepy spots, dark little corners, deserted areas, or almost… Plenty of opportunities to let your mind run wild with the most nightmarish horror stories, and to indulge in the bizarre pleasure we take in scaring ourselves silly!

If you like thrills and excitement, here’s a little selection of places that will send a chill down your spine, without putting yourself in any real danger of course (because that would just be plain foolish!)

Classics

Loyasse Cemetery, on Fourvière hill, is home to magnificent nineteenth-century monumental tombs. It is also the resting place of the mystic and healer Nizier Anthelme Philippe (known as ‘Maître Philippe’), whose grave has been adorned with flowers ever since his death in 1905…

Another amazing and little-known place is the ossuary in the crypt of the Chapelle expiatoire (expiatory chapel) known as ‘La Croix-Glorieuse’, which commemorates victims of the French Revolution.

Did you know that a witch is said to have been drowned in the well in the courtyard of Hôtel Bullioud, where the superb ‘Galerie Philibert de l’Orme’ stands, at number 8 Rue Juiverie? Nearby, at number 23, is Maison Dugas, with its spooky looking façade adorned with lion heads.

Halloween is around the corner...

The 31st of October is of course Halloween. Here are a few excellent events to have a ghoulishly good time.

Le Bal des Fantômes: la sorcière et le magicien, (The Phantom Ball: the witch and the warlock), (2.30 pm and 5 pm) – a show that mingles magic, illusions and humour. Fancy dress is encouraged!

The Zombie Therapy Show, combines comedy, horror and magic to give you a vaccine for fear… At the Acte 2 Théâtre.

Halloween Pirate Party, on Ayers Boat brings together creatures of the night and monsters of the deep in a swashbuckling setting! There is also a vote for the evening’s Pirate King and Queen. Good times guaranteed!

The boldest among you will love the thrilling and nerve-wracking 1-hour-and-20-minute experience offered by  Vanciaventures with its Survivor Horreur Escape Game (which is so scary it’s forbidden for people under the age of 18 or with a heart condition). There is also a  special Halloween trail every Friday and Saturday in October at nightfall… Terrifying! Best enjoyed with the reassuring presence of your friends (for groups of 5 to 9 people).

Some may also be brave enough to take on the Closed Escape Game, in search of the little Mary, who has disappeared in mysterious circumstances… This Escape Room is for ages 15 and above. Prepare yourself for a few sleepless nights afterwards. Further information

We bet you’ll be looking over your shoulder as you make your way home!
