Did they play as we do nowadays 2000 years ago?
From 20 June to 1 December 2019, at Lugdunum - Museum
Spinning tops, dolls, jacks, toy tea sets, rattles, hobby horses, bow and arrows, dice, draughts, balls… Games of make-believe, strategy, chance or skill… All of these have made their way across borders and through centuries, from Greek and Roman Antiquity to the present day!
People loved to play games in Antiquity, every day, at all ages and whatever their condition! In that respect, nothing has changed. Exploring similarities and differences, this exhibition looks at playing, as both a form of entertainment and learning, and how it happened in practice: who played together? How? Why? Parallels are drawn with the present day and countries around the world.
Antiquity is a source of inspiration for game publishers, but what do archaeologists have to say?
This fun and archaeological approach, involving objects from various museums, reveals a particular side of humanity.
Admission to the Museum and its exhibition is included in the Lyon City Card.
Isabelle, our editor born and bred in Lyon! She was born in Sainte-Foy-lès-Lyon in fact, studied in Lyon and now lives here. Territorial? Absolutely not! She loves travelling, widening her horizons, meeting new people and enjoys a change of scenery (without snow, if possible). Isabelle is curious and a people person, two attributes that often go hand in hand! Her favourite colour is green and her motto "a day without laughter is a day wasted!"
