One theme evoking passion and two colours: the black of night, death, doom and misfortune; the red of fire, blood, tragic love and celebration. The tone is set.

Three operas on the programme:

Rigoletto by Giuseppe Verdi,

This magnificent and very dark opera, featuring a curse, honour, love and revenge, was based on a neglected work by Victor Hugo.  The unconventional production by Axel Ranisch offers plenty of surprises. The orchestra is conducted by Michele Spotti.

Irrelohe by Franz Schreker

A romantic drama, a family curse, jealousy and hate form the tale of Irrelohe, a rare opera written by Schreker – composer of Die Gezeichneten (The Branded), who was shut out by the Nazis in Germany – that offers music of great richness and modernity. The opera is conducted by Bernhard Kontarsky and directed by David Bösch (who has already directed The Branded).

Der Mond (The moon) by Carl Orff

Performed outside of the Opera House, at the Théâtre du Point du Jour, this opera is based on The Moon, a strange and gloomy tale by the Brothers Grimm. It features the original signature of the composer of the Carmina Burana. The dark scenery is lit up with video animations created by Grégoire Pont, full of poetry and mysterious beauty, and sprinkled with humour.  With the choir Spirito. A show for the whole family (ages 7 and above). In German with French surtitles.
