Travel back in time
On Thursday the 24th and then the 26th and 27th of May 2018, Lyon will be travelling back in time to the Renaissance!
Ever heard of the ‘Pennons’? Here’s a quick look back at their history:
In 1320, the Archbishop of Lyon granted Lyon’s bourgeoisie the right to guard the city gates and maintain order within its walls. Hence the Pennons – a group of civilians that guarded and patrolled the city’s neighbourhoods – were born.
Today, the vocation is festive rather than military, with an event that brings Renaissance Lyon back to life!
This year, Fête Renaissance celebrates one of Lyon’s local traditions – printing. In fact, Lyon is proud to be the place where the first book in French was printed, all the way back in 1478!
On the programme: a procession and activities beginning on Place Bellecour and ending at Place des Terreaux on Thursday the 24th of May, plus a lively weekend in the Vieux-Lyon (Old Lyon) district, with fencing, shows, encampments, concerts, dances, period games and more.
Vieux-Lyon will be living up to its name more than ever before!

Eléonore is the romantic member of the team! Rumour has it that she knows her classics better than anyone else, and if you want to strike up a conversation with her, just mention Jane Austen, and you'll be away!
