The power of opera
From the 16th of March to the 6th of April 2018, the Lyon Opera will sing Verdi
The Lyon Opera has decided to honour Daniele Rustoni, its new permanent conductor from Milan, by choosing a composer from the same city for its annual festival, and not just any composer – Verdi!
The Opera will be revisiting three of Verdi’s less known works – Macbeth, Don Carlos and the even rarer Attila – in keeping with this season’s theme: ‘des guerres et des rois’ (of wars and kings).They give three different perspectives of the destructive force of power: that which drove Macbeth mad, that which destroyed the soul and beautiful illusions of Don Carlos, and that which crushed Attila…
Ivo van Hove brings the Shakespearian drama of Macbeth into twenty-first century Wall Street and the ruthless world of international finance.
For the first time, Don Carlos will be performed in French and in full (5 hours). The director, Christophe Honoré, has opted for a highly theatrical approach, to which this work lends itself superbly.
Lastly, Attila will be given in a concert version at the Lyon Auditorium.
Three works of political drama, imbued with hope and humanity.Verdi’s opera choruses are as powerful and sublime as ever.
