The joys of shopping for second-hand wonders
Fancy unearthing the perfect little second-hand dress, a vintage handbag, some retro furniture or an old postcard that's sure to make somebody smile? Then here's a great selection of events that will awaken the bargain hunter or antique collector in you!
When the fine weather arrives or at the beginning of autumn, flea markets and garage sales spring up all over the city of Lyon, offering bargain hunters a paradise of possibilities. Some places, however, are open all year round, such as the Puces du Canal flea market in Villeurbanne, which is located along the Jonage Canal. Since 1995, second-hand and antique dealers have shared 6 hectares with thrift shops, offering visitors a real journey back in time. With around 200 shops run by passionate merchants and 400 stalls, it is the second largest flea market in France after the Saint-Ouen market in the Paris region.
Although smaller, there are many other curiosity shops elsewhere in the city. On the Presqu'Île de Lyon, a street located a few steps from Place Bellecour is known as 'Antique Street': Rue Auguste-Comte. Each shop has its own speciality: Antiquités Marilyn, for example, sells antique dolls. On the other side of the Rhône, Place Maréchal Lyautey in the 6th arrondissement is home to Maison Magenta, which offers a selection of French antiques and antique objects right next to its art gallery.
Flea markets, garage sales and street markets: unmissable events in Lyon
These permanent shops are not the only places where you can find second-hand dresses, vintage items, retro furniture or almost-new toys for just one euro. There are often numerous garage sales in Lyon, brimming with treasures. Some have even become unmissable events. Here is our selection of the best flea markets and garage sales:
- "Le vrai vide-greniers montchatois" in March is a family-friendly event, just like the neighbourhood itself in Lyon's 3rd arrondissement. Since 2024, it has replaced the Grand Vide-Grenier de Montchat, which used to take place in October.
- "Plaisir de chiner" in June, in the 7th arrondissement is a huge flea market with over 300 stallholders (including many local residents) on the pavements of Avenue Jean Jaurès and Avenue Maréchal de Saxe.
- "Croix-Rousse en Fête", also held in June features a street market with permanent and temporary traders, as well as a market for designers and producers on Grande Rue de la Croix-Rousse.
- "La Grande Braderie de la Croix-Rousse", in September, is a street market organised by local traders and is one of the major events in Croix-Rousse.
- "Le Vide-greniers des Dragons de Saint-Georges", also in September, is one of Lyon's most iconic street markets, located in the Saint-Georges district. With a refreshment bar, a friendly atmosphere, and numerous sellers, there are plenty of bargains to be had!
- "La Brocante du Vieux-Lyon", also in September, sees around fifty professional antique dealers and second-hand goods sellers display their vintage items opposite the cathedral.
- "De brad’ et de broc’" in the 7th arrondissement in September is the second major flea market on Avenue Jean-Jaurès and Avenue de Saxe. This is a festive event organised by the Lyon 7 Rive-Gauche city centre management association.
